Leona Lewis and Estelle Land First Ever VMA for Best UK Video

Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis earned a nomination for the first ever MTV Video Music Award for "Best UK Video" this week joining Duffy, The Ting Tings, Coldplay and Estelle who are also nominated. In an unprecedented move, MTV has clearly taken notice of what some may call 2008's "British Invasion," by creating a "Best UK Video" category, especially since the network hosts the MTV Europe Music Awards in November. British acts have had a highly successful run in the North America this year. Leona Lewis and Estelle alone have topped the Billboard charts for weeks at a time with their respective hits "Bleeding Love" and "American Boy." Lewis' debut album "Spirit" earned her the distinction of becoming the first British female solo artist in over 20 years to top the Billboard 200 and it's respective pop charts. The album has since sold well over 2 million copies. Estelle, who is also signed to John Legend's Homeschool label, recently earned a nomination for Britain's esteemed Mercury Prize. Lewis and Estelle go "head to head" at the MTV Video Music Awards, airing Live on MTV September 7th.
