Update: The Reasons Behind Usher’s Wedding Cancellation

Usher

R&B star Usher's wedding to Tameka Foster on Saturday (Jul 28) was canceled because of a series of disagreements between the pair, according to reports. The superstar was hoping to wed his pregnant fiancé on Saturday afternoon (28Jul07) at record executive Antonio 'L.A.' Reid's home in Long Island, New York. But the ceremony was called off just hours before the pair were due to get married, allegedly due to a string of differences in opinion between the couple and Usher's mother's disapproval of the impending nuptials. A source tells People.com, "Usher's mother (and former manager, Jonetta Patton, whom he fired in May) is against the wedding. That is one of the main obstacles. They only decided two weeks ago to have a wedding. They wanted to have it take place before the baby bump started showing." However, another source tells the site, "Usher changed his mind" on the day, adding, "[The couple] had a lot of differences about the details. For example, the bride wanted barbeque, (Usher) wanted to have (renowned chef) Jean Georges cook. Due to the differences, the wedding "was on again off again for the past few days. Foster was calling it off because she wasn't getting the things that she wanted. The mother was calling it off. ... Usher was calling it off." Usher's spokeswoman, Patti Webster issued a statement on Saturday (28Jul07), refusing to comment on whether or not the couple had split. She said, "No additional information will be given regarding the circumstances of the cancellation, but we hope the privacy of this matter will be respected." It was also reported that Usher’s godfather, actor Ben Vereen, had been snatched off the guest list because of his view of Foster. The New York Daily News said Usher's mother was invited at the last minute, though an unnamed source told the paper she did not want to go. As for the wedding logistics, People quoted an insider who said: "The tents were up. And they paid all of the people, the vendors, so that wasn't an issue. ... Hotel rooms were an issue. Janet [Jackson] was coming, but she had eight security people. Ashanti and Nelly were coming." While the source said the couple’s wedding cancellation may not be permanent, Usher’s rep would not comment.
