U2 - The Fly (Live) guitar tab
The Fly (live)
Transcribed by Richard Zangoli.(ahowden@magna.com.au)
Well, I got a request to tab the live version of this song a while
back so this is it or at least what I can make of it. I transcribed it from
the Sydney concert video. It is also useful to use this transcription in
conjunction with the previous one on the archive. Tune down 1/2 a step.
For the intro Edge plays something like this (quite a few times)-
E------------------------------------------------------------
B------------------------------------------------------------
G------------------------------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------------------
A-------------7---7-----7-------7-----7--5-------------------
E--15s/----0---------0-----0---------------------------------
When Bono sings "no secret that our world is in darkness tonight" play this
with a wah-wah and tremolo bar if you have got them-
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------
B----12--12--12--12------------14--14--12--12-----x--x--x---12--12--12--12-
G----12--12--12--12------------14--14--12--12-----x--x--x---12--12--12--12-
D----12--12--12--12------------14--14--12--12-----x--x--x---12--12--12--12-
A--------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then it goes back to the main riff. Then sythesiser then plays the C#m, E
and A chords a couple of times (see the previous transcription to this song).
After Bono sings "it's no secret" Edge plays something like this again with
the wah-wah and tremolo bar-
RIFF 1-
E------------------------------------------------
B--x--x--x--x-----8--8-----x--x---x--x----8--8---
G--x--x--x--x-----7--7-----x--x---x--x----7--7----
D--x--x--x--x--------------x--x---x--x-----------
A-------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------
For the next bit Edge plays around with the first few notes of an E chord
and then slides up from the 15th fret on the big E string. This is similar
to what I play for this part but feel free to ad lib as I don't exactly know
what he plays-
RIFF 2-
E--------------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------------
G--------------------------------------------------------- etc..
D----------------------------------------------------------
A-----------2--0-------------------------------------------
E---0--0----------0--0--0--------------15s/---------------
It then goes back to C#m E and A synthesiser chords then to RIFF 1. From
watching Edge play the next bit I think he hits a B bar chord(799877),
presses and then releases the tremolo bar. However, because I don't have a
tremolo bar I play this which sounds quite similar-
E---------------------------------------
B---12--12s/11s/12-------x--x--x--x--x---
G---11--11s/10s/11-------x--x--x--x--x---
D----9---9s/-8s/9--------x--x--x--x--x--- x3
A------------------------x--x--x--x--x---
E------------------------0--0--0--0--0---
Now for the solo (I wont tab all the strings here)-
E-----------------------------------------------------------------------
B--20--20--19--15--17(hold)s/---------------20--20--19--15--12(hold)s/--
G-----------------------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------------------------
B---20--19--15--17--20--20--19--15--------15--15--14--14--12--12--10--10-
G------------------------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------------------------
B--8--8--7--7--5--5--3--3s/5----------s/10--9--7--5------s/10--9--7--9---
G------------------------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------------------------
B-13b(14)-13b(14)--13b(14)--13b(14)--s/14--14-12-12-12s/10--10s/9--9h10--9-7-
G----------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------
B--5---5h7---s/9--7--5--7--7s/9--7--5--5h7--7s/9--7--5h7-----5--5--7--7--9--9
G----------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------
B--10--10--12--12--14--14--15--15--17--17-------
G-----------------------------------------------
Then for the next bit Edge ad libs a lot but this will give you an idea of
what he plays-
E----------12-----------12------------------12----------12---------12--------12
B-s/9----------9--10----------10----s/9-----------10----------s/9--------10----
G------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E------------------16--------16--------16----------------------------12-------
B10--------s/12----------12--------12--------12--------------s/9----------10-9
G-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------12----------------------------------12-------------------
B------------s/9----------10--9------------------s/9---------10--9------------
G11--9------------------------------11--9--------------------------------11---
E------------16----------16-----------16-----------
B----s/12----------12-----------12-----------12----
G---------------------------------------------------
After this just ad lib using the same structures as above. Then it goes back
to RIFF 2 and then to the main riff. Then Edge plays this- (where the is an
"x" in brackets you can either play a mute string or the note before it as
either sound OK)-
E-------------------------------------------------------------------------
B---20--20--20--20b---17(x)----20b------17--17--17---17b--15(x)--17b------ x 2
G--------------------------------------------------------------------------
and then-
E-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B-20--20--20--20b--20b---20--17--15--17s/--------s/12---------12----------------
G------------------------------------------------------14----------14--12--11-9-
For the little jam right at the end this is my best approximation-
E----0--------0-----0-------0------0------0---------0------0----------------
Bs/5----3h5------5-----3h5------5-----5--------3h5------5-----3----2----0--- x 2
G---------------------------------------------------------------------------
and end on-
E------------------------------
B---5(hold)-------------5s/----
G-----------------------4s/----
And that's it. If there are any comments e-mail me.

-corrections- *The Fly--This one is in Em. The chords seemed to
be putting the song in E major. Actually, Edge probably
used power chords, which would hide the key's tonality.
The main riff seems right, just don't put it in E major.

first knob closest to the distortion knob, just so you have to turn up
your volume knob a couple notches more.
