MYSTERIOUS WAYS (live with solo) - U2

-corrections-

*Mysterious Ways--Actually, the guy had the right

chord changes, I think, but the song is done easier

when tuned down 1/2 step, and played in B major (which

gives it a Bb tone). Just tune down 1/2 step and use power

chords with a lot of distortion, flange, and wah. The 4

chords are: B, E, A, D.

"Mysterious Ways"

tabbed by: Scott Yanoff, yanoff@csd4.csd.uwm.edu

(Heavy distortion recommended)

This song can be played with a capo on the 8th fret, if you can do that.

Then it becomes fairly simple just playing D instead of A, etc. (see the

chord formations). Or you can play it with a capo on 1st fret, which is

how I've finally put the chords. [Editor's Comment]

Intro/transitions: (Repeated about 9 times)

E--------------------------------------

B------10-10---------------------------

G-------9--9---------------------------

D----7--7--7---------------------------

(Note: chords given below generally are played by an organ in background)

A D

A E

A D

You've been living underground, eating from a can

A E A

You've been running away from what you don't understand (love)

Mysterious Ways by U2 (album version)

Transcribed by Richard Zangoli (ahowden@magna.com.au)

I saw the transcriptions to this song on the Archive and noticed

some mistakes and that they weren't 100% complete. This is the complete tab

to the album version and I can guarantee that it is quite accurate because I

used a professional transcription that appeared in a guitar magazine a few

years back as a guide. Tune down 1/2 a step and use a wah-wah where

appropriate. The transcription actually says to use an envelope filter (what

the hell is that?!) and some reverb but when Edge plays it live he obviously

uses some sort of wah effect.

The intro-

E---7-----------------------------

B---7-----------------------------

G---8----------------------------- x 8

D---9---9--9s/------x--x-----7h9---

A---9---9--9s/---------------------

E-------7--7s/----------------------

For the verses this is the keyboard arranged for guitar-

Johnny take a walk with your sister the moon let her pale light in to

fill up

E--7---------------------------------------------------------------------

B--7---------------------------------------------------------------------

G--8-----8------------------9----------------------8----------------11---

D--9-----9------------------9----------------------9----------------11---

A--9---------------------------------------------------------------------

E--7---------------------------------------------------------------------

your room. You've been living underground, eating from a can, you've been

running away

E------------------------------------------------------------------------

B------------------------------------------------------------------------

G-----------------8-------------------9------------------------------8---

D-----------------9-------------------9------------------------------9---

A------------------------------------------------------------------------

E------------------------------------------------------------------------

from what you don't understand. Look,

E---------------------------------------

B---------------------------------------

G---------------11--------------8--------

D---------------11--------------9--------

A----------------------------------------

E----------------------------------------

The second verse is the same with the only difference being that after Bono

sings "you can't explain", Edge plays this-

E---------

B--15s/---

G--15s/---

D--15s/---

A---------

E---------

Note that instead of playing the synthesiser chords as I have tabbed them

above (ie. B(xx89xx),E5(xx99xx),F5(xx11 11xx)) you might want to just play

the bar chords (ie. B(799xxx),E(x799xx),F(x9 11 11xx)) as they sound ok and

in my opinion are easier to play.

For the pre-chorus Edge plays something like this-

She's slippery, You're sliding down she's gonna be

there when

E---7---7s/--------------------12---12s/---------------------7--7s/---------

B---7---7s/--------------------12---12s/---------------------7--7s/---------

G---8---8s/--------------------13---13s/---------------------8--8s/---------

D---9---9s/--------------------14---14s/---------------------9--9s/---------

A---9--------------------------14----------------------------9--------------

E---7--------------------------12----------------------------7--------------

you hit the ground

E------12--12--12--12--12-----12s/--

B------12--12--12--12--12-----12s/--

G------13--13--13--13--13-----13s/--

D------14--14--14-------------14s/--

A------14--14--14-------------14s/--

E------12--12--12-------------12s/--

For the second pre-chorus (ie she's the wave...) play something similar.

Now for the chorus-

It's alright, it's alright it's alright She moves

in

E----7--------------7-------------------------------12--10----10--10--10--10-

B----7--------------7-------------------------------12--10----10--10--10--10-

G----8--------------8------s/13----13--13--13-------13--11----11--11--11--11-

D----9--------------9------s/14----14--14--14-----------------12--12--12--12-

A----9--------------9------s/14----14--14--14-----------------12--12--12--12-

E----7--------------7------s/12----12--12--12-----------------10--10--10--10-

mysterious ways

E---5-----5-----5----5s/--

B---5-----5-----5----5s/--

G---6-----6-----6----6s/--

D---7-----7-----7----7s/-- and play the B E D and A chords over.

A---7-----7-----7----7s/--

E---5-----5-----5----5s/--

After the first chorus the intro riff is played 3 times.

Now for the bit just before the guitar solo. There are two guitars here. One

is playing this with some delay (listen to the record for the timing)-

E---17--19--17--19--17--19--17--19-

B----------------------------------

G---------------------------------- x 5

and the other is playing this (this is what Edge plays in the live version)-

E---2-------------------------

B---2--------------------------

G---3------------------------- x 5

D---4----4--4s/------x--2h4---

A---4----4--4s/---------------

E---2----2--2s/----------------

Now for the actual solo-

E----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B-16--16--16--16-----------------------------16--16--16--16--x--x--17--x-x--16----14

G-14--14--14--14------------14---------------14--14--14--14--x--x--14--x-x--14----14

D---------------------14h16------16---14----------------------------------------14--

A-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B--16--16--16--16--x--x--17--x--x--16----14-----16--16--16--16--x-x--16--17--16----14

G--14--14--14--14--x--x--14--x--x--14----14-----14--14--14--14--x-x--14--14--14----14

D-------------------------------------14----------------------------------------14---

A------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B-16--16--16--16--x-x--17--x-x--16----14----16--16--16--16--x--x-17--x-x--16-----14-

G-14--14--14--14--x-x--14--x-x--14----14----14--14--14--14--x--x-14--x-x--14-----14-

D----------------------------------14-----------------------------------------14----

A-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the bridge before the chorus simply play the chorus chords(ie. B,E,D,A)

arppeggio.

For example-

One day you'll look back and you'll see

E---7------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B---7-------------7----------------9-------9h10p9----------------------------------

G---8-------8--------8------8------9---9--------------9-----9-----11---11--11------

D---9-------9------------9---------9---------------------9--9-----12-------12------

A---9------------------------------7------------------------------12---------------

E---7-------------------------------------------------------------10---------------

where you were held how by this love

E----`------------------5--5--5---5---5-----

B-----------------------5--5--5---5---5-----

G------11------11-------6--6--6---6---6-----

D------12------12-------7--7--7---7---7-----

A------12------12-------7--7--7---7---7-----

E-----------------------5--5--5---5---5------

And then go back to playing the chorus chords normally. Play them during the

final time that the chorus is sung and end on the B chord.

That should have all the guitar bits and, by the way, the bass line (I think

the only really distinguishable one in the album version) is this-

G---------------------------------

D---------------------------------

A--------5-----5h7--5------------- over and over again.

E----7-------------------7----5---

Richard Zangoli.
