The Elms

The Elms - Smile At Life Again guitar tab

Song: Smile at Life Again

Artist: The Elms

Album: Truth, Soul, Rock & Roll

Written By: Owen Thomas and Thomas Daugherty

Label: Sparrow Records

This is EXACTLY the way Mr. Daugherty plays it on the CD! It's a gorgeous

song and not hard at all once you get the hang of it.

CAPO 4TH FRET

INTRO:

For the intro’s second and third notes you’ll want to bar the 1st and 2nd

string (e & b) on the 3rd fret with your middle finger. Then play this:

E-----3---2---0--

B---3-----3-3-1--

G-0-----0--------

D---------------- (4X)

A----------------

E----------------

VERSES:

Hold down the G chord using your pinkie finger, your middle finger and your

ring finger. If you don’t do it this way it’ll be infinitely harder to play

I don’t know if this will make it any easier for anyone, but the chord

progression for the verses goes like this (there’s just a definite picking

pattern): G Am7 G Am G C G C G - fancy picking thing (2x) If you hold down

those chords with the correct fingers it’s nowhere near as hard to play as it

could be.

G Am7 G Am G C

E--------------------------------------------------------------—

B-----0----1----0----1-----1---3--1---—–0--0---------1--0---0--—

G---0--------3----3----0h2-—-2--2--2---0--0--0--------0----0---—

D----------------------------------------0--0----0h2-----------—

A--------------------0----—----0--0------------3--------3------—

E-3-----3—-0----3---------------------3------------------------—

G C G (fancy picking thing)

E-------------------------------------------------

B----0----------1------0-----0h1-0--------------3-

G---0--0---------------------------2-0------------

D-----0----0h2---2---0---0-------------0-0-4-5---- (2x)

A--------3----------------------------------------

E-3----------------3------------------------------

The second time around go directly into the chorus, if you pause at all it’s

not gonna be right. (listen to the CD, you'll hear what I mean)

CHORUSES:

E------- S -3-2-2-0-0------

B------- T -3-3-3-1-1-3-3--

G------- R -0-0-0-0-0-0-0--

D-5-4-0- U -----------0-0--

A------- M ----------------

E------- ----------------

C G D (D lick) C G D (2X)

The D lick used in the chorus goes like this (you can hear it on the CD if you

listen). To make it easy on yourself, hold down D with your ring, middle and

pointer fingers, and instead of using your pinkie to do the hammering with,

manipulate your ring finger for the hammering, it’s much easier...for me at

least. It’s simple once you get the hang of it, and it sounds really nice.

E-2h3-2-0---

B---------3-

G-----------

D-----------

A-----------

E-----------

The intro is used as a “fill” between the choruses and verses.

BRIDGE:

Due to inability to post lyrics you're going to have to figure out when this

part is by yourself. It's not hard to find it, it's the only part different

from the intro, verses, and choruses.

Again, there is a chord pattern, Am Em D, but a definite picking pattern.

(same D lick as

Am Em D used in Chorus)

E-----------------------------2---2h3-2-0--------

B--------1-0---------0------3-------------3------

G---0h3--2-2--—-------0--------2----------------—

D------------------------0-----------------------

A-0------0-0----0h2------------------------------

E-------------0----------------------------------

That should just about do it. These tabs are EXACTLY correct. They sound just

like the CD. This is a beautiful song. Listen carefully to it when you’re

trying to read this tab, it’ll help a lot, really. I'm sorry it's kinda' hard

to read, but once you do it's perfect.

Good Luck! Mindy (michelebayko@cs.com)
