Phish - You Enjoy Myself (Live) guitar tab

"You Enjoy Myself"

music and lyrics by Trey Anastasio

as performed by Phish on 1986, Junta, and A Live One

and MANY public performances

compilation tab

first movement by trthomp917@aol.com (I don't know who he is, I just found his tab on TabCrawler)

the rest of the tab by eric berman and jay levin

excepting the notes and the Final Fantasy tab by me

complied by J.S. Trageser 7/17/01

Updates & corrections 9/2/01

This is the most complete and correct version of the tab that I could

come up with. I hope it will help. I recommend using Junta as your guide

in spite of the picosecond-long blip during the intro (it's apparently

on the master, because it seems to be on every copy). If you want to use

a live show, I would suggest the one from February 1990 (I don't

remember exact date or location) because it's all together and yet it's

really simple; no fancy work or special sections; not even a spacey jam.

I've been working on learning this song for about a year. It is worth

it. I hope that you enjoy myself.

introduction

general time approx. 4 notes/beat

minor variations on arpeggiated A chord

play twice, ending at the asterisk, hold till it fades, and pause for

about 4 beats. Sometimes I like to rake up muted G7#9 before going onward.

guitar is tacet, or noodles softly a bit around the G triad

maybe do a few harmonics w/ volume pedal if things are slow

this segment was originally just a couple of measures of rapping on

cymbals, but it has evolved into a keyboard/drum jam. UPDATE: I like to

fill in here with the Final Fantasy theme as a riff. This is not really

exactly what that piece is, but it sounds very close; it is a scale, I

think quadratic, starting at C on the 6th string. . . I learned this

from TabCrawler, too. I don't think it's on there anymore.

I know, Trey has never played this. It just sounds good to me.

many, many bends and slides. the "/1" indicates that you strike the first note,

bend it up to the note in parentheses, and let it down in one beat. the -/

indicates that you use a compressor to hold the pitch at the left-hand side

of the mark until the right hand side of it, while playing the notes in between.

all fractions indicate a degree of bend.

shootout at the ok corral this is a little hard-rock buildup riff that

is played over a wild-west backing on piano. the piano sounds like that

in a saloon, hence the name. just play these bar-chords in standard form

and rise up the neck. the "sus" can either be a full sustain build, but

simply raising the note played on the 2nd string up half a step works

for me. this is the progression:

B C C# C#sus C# D D# E Esus E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D

around the G, Trey starts screaming, rising in pitch and intensity

until the D, at which he yells "BOY!" and makes the transition to

the funky end part.

the jam this is a very difficult bit to transcribe; after all, it is a

jam. use these chords as a guide, vary the number of repetitions and try

some variations on the chords. if the groove calls for picking, I

suggest using the G sliding pentatonic (start at 5th string, 10th

fret). then, use chords that fall along that scale. that's it! here are

the jam chords and highly disputed lyrics:
