(D) Standing here at Lake Bank, on Cemetery Hill
Trying to get into the right frame of (A) mind.
The wind blows hard, yet it is soft and still
And I’m still looking for short-cuts I could not (D) find
(D) Look two miles east, that’s where I was born
Look a mile south, that where I went to (A)school
To the west is Salt Creek, land of yellow corn
Finally north, where I left this land like a (D) fool
(D) I remember when I was young and free
Had no problems, was just killing (A) time.
When one day that old man told me
That it was time that was killing (D) me.
(D)Now sixty years later, I stand here by my marker
Doubting the quality of my much touted (A) dash
I admit that I could have worked harder
Then my life’s story rushes by in a (D) flash
(D) Now the sun’s going down cross Salt Creek on the west
My stone-marker’s shadow makes a long, long (A) cast
The number one son, has come home....to rest
Home, finally back home....at (D) last.
