STEPPING STONES

To my knowledge, the original song was written an performed

by the Monkees (of "Hey Hey We're the Monkees!" fame) and

Minor Threat picked up the song for a cover version. (amazing

how much mileage the song got)

My friend Steve Jones (star@wam.umd.edu) typed in the lyrics for

Stepping Stones about a year back. This is actually from

the version done by the the Monkees, but you will find that

the Minor Threat version is very similar

(Just use more distortion and scream the lyrics :-)

************ The Lyrics *****************

I I I I I'm not your stepping stone

You're trying to make your mark in society

Using all the tricks that you used on me

You're reading all them high fashion magazines

The cloths you're wearing lately causing public scenes

I said I I I I I'm not your stepping stone

I I I I I'm not your stepping stone

Not your stepping stone Not your stepping stone

When I first met you girl, you didn't have no shoes

But now your walkin' 'round like your front page news

You've been awful careful about the friends you choose

But You woun't find my name in your book of who's who

-> fade

********** The Chords *****************

Disclaimer: I don't have the recording or my guitar

at the terminal with me, and my memory isn't flawless

The chords for this are fairly simple, making this a good song

for a beginning band.

The basic pattern is:

E E G G A A C C

I would do this with power chords, especially for the Minor Threat

version i.e.:

----------------------------

----------------------------

--------------2--2--5--5----

--2--2--5--5--2--2--5--5----

--2--2--5--5--0--0--3--3----

--0--0--3--3----------------

There is another section later on with this part repeated:

E E E G A G
