Former Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams has been tapped for the role of Shug Avery for the Chicago production of “The Color Purple.” The singer, who has also enjoyed a successful gospel career, will debut April 17th in the first national tour of Oprah Winfrey’s Broadway hit at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre. "This is just a dream come true," said Williams, whose hometown of Rockford is about 80 miles west of Chicago. "I could not pass up the opportunity to do The Color Purple. To have the privilege of even auditioning was an honor for me." Producer Scott Sanders said Williams will make a perfect Shug Avery because the character is the lone person in the musical who has "seen the world." Williams’ theater resume includes playing the title role in Broadway’s "Aida.” “American Idol” veteran LaToya London is also in the Chicago cast as Celie’s sister Nettie. As previously reported (American Idol's Fantasia Barrino to Join The Color Purple), Fantasia Barrino will take over the role of Celie on Broadway April 10. The Color Purple will be staged at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre from April 17 through July 22. For tickets, call Ticketmaster at (312) 902-1400, visit www.BroadwayInChicago.com or visit the Broadway In Chicago box offices (at 151 West Randolph Street, 24 West Randolph Street and 18 West Monroe Street).
Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams goes another route with “Unexpected,” after releasing two gospel albums. Driven by heavy bass and curvy synth, “Unexpected” is more R&B/dance bassed. The disc marks the follow-up to her 2004's "Do You Know" and 2002's "Heart to Yours." The first single off “Unexpected” will the synth-heavy "We Break the Dawn." However, Music World CEO Mathew Knowles insists "Unexpected" isn't that much of a stretch, considering the characteristically quiet Williams spent the bulk of 2007 playing the sexy character Shug Avery in Oprah Winfrey's Chicago-based cast of "The Color Purple." "Destiny's Child fans bought Michelle's last album (which sold about 78,000 copies)," said Knowles. "So now those fans are in their late 20s and early 30s. With 'Unexpected,' she'll be able to appeal to those fans and reach back to the 16-year-old audience and hit mainstream pop radio." "We Break the Dawn" is the first single, set for release in April, while "Stop This Car" is the second.
Michelle Williams checked in with fans on her blog at MySpace on Friday (January 4). The former Destiny's Child R&B star writes: Hey Hey! Happy New Year to my beautiful MySpace family!
