Pull Off Lesson

Now, if you are like me when I first started, you may not be sure
what a pull-off even is. I wasn't. I looked up definitions of
it and it still didn't help me. I'll show you in this lesson the
easiest way, that I know of, to do pull-offs. They're actually
very simple once you realize what they are.
A pull of is basically a reverse hammer-on, (refer to my Hammer
On Lesson if you do not know what it is, althought it isn't necesarrily
required to know what it is for this lesson). Pull-offs are one
of the most important elements in songs, especially in solos,
but you DO see them in choruses, verses, etc. Let's set up a simple
scenario.

The p here obviously stands for the pull-off, while the numbers
represent
the frets. Now the easiest way to do this is to place your ring
finger on the 7th fret, and your pointer finger on the 5th fret.
When you pluck the
string, you will hear the 7th fret because it is further down
the neck.
Now, you want to pluck the string and pull down on it slightly.
As you pull
down, let go of the string. You don't even have to pluck the string
again.
If you did it correctly, you should hear a quick transition from
the 7th to
the 5th fret. If it was slow, you need to pluck/pull/let go faster.
Try it
over and over increasing your speed.
After you get the basic pull off motion and speed down, try this:
From Metal Militia by Metallica
Tabbed by me of course :)
NOTE: When pulling off to an open note, just pull down and let go.

Now if you don't know the song, it's okay. It is a great exercise
though because it is a pull-off progression. Gradually increase
your speed.
Invent your own little pull-off exercises. If you practice
these riffs and increase your speed, youll be mastering pull-offs
with no problem very soon. I hope this could help you like it helped
me.
