I could not believe this BEAUTIFUL song was not in the archives already,
so I figured it out the best I could. I have subsequently seen the sheet
music (which I believe is out-of-print) and made the corrections as well
as I could remember them. I use a B-flat chord instead of the C w/B-flat
bass. I like the sound of it a little better that way. I also use
Am7 ( 0 0 2 2 1 3) in place of the 2nd Am in each line of the chorus.
The sheet music also shows a G w/B bass preceding each C/Bb.

Here is a poem that my lady sent down
G F C G
One morning when I was away
C G C/Bb F
Wrote on the back of a leaf that she found
G F C G
Somewhere around Monterey
C G C/Bb F
And here is the key to a house far away
G F C G
Where I used to live as a child
C G C/Bb F
They tore down the building when I moved away
G F C G
And left the key unreconciled
Am C Am FMaj7
And down in the canyon the smoke starts to rise
Am C Am FMaj7
It rides on the wind 'til it reaches your eyes
Am C Am FMaj7 FMaj7 G
When faced with the past the strongest man cries, cries
C G C/Bb F G F C G
C G C/Bb F G F C G

It rides on the wind 'til it reaches your eyes
Am C Am FMaj7 FMaj7 G
When faced with the past the strongest man cries, cries
C G C/Bb F
And here is a sunrise to set on your sill
G F C G
The ghosts of the dawn moving near

They pass through your sorrow and leave you quite still
